Intro:

Today we are going to make a green ‘pet’ using junk materials and seeds. After making it, we are going to cover it with seeds, spray water on it and watch it grow! You will have to spray water on it everyday and take care of your pet while it grows. It will also need some sun!

Ask: who are some interesting cartoon characters that you know? what are they like? let’s think about a personality like this when we are making our pet.

Super Mario – always jumping, adventurous, cheerful
Sonic the Hedgehog – super fast, confident, a little mischievous
Link (from Zelda) – brave, determined, resourceful
Pikachu (from Pokémon) – small, cute, energetic, and loyal
Angry birds
Mickey Mouse
Hello Kitty - cute

You will need:

Fabric
soil
assorted discarded household objects
newspaper
Hot Glue
Water
Googly eyes (piyumika will bring)
Scissors
String
Googly eyes (you canals make this)
yoghurt cup
A container to put seeds in
Kasa kasa/ chia seeds

Intro Game: Character walk

Print or write these onto chits and put it into a bowl

Line up the children and teachers at the front of the class and each child picks a chit and walks across the room as the character they chose. then they sit back in their spot in the class. Do this until all the children are sitting down!

Main Activity: turn an object into a green pet with personality!

Steps

Pick a household object that you do not need. Example: Yoghurt cup, spray bottle, old plastic fork or egg carton.
Draw it as a cartoon character. Think about its personality.
- Is it happy, grumpy, sneaky, or adventurous?
- How would it move or react in different situations?
Go back to your object and change it into a character
- Give it eyes , a nose, a mouth, hair, or other details.
While students are making, Fill a bowl with water and chia / kasa kasa / basil seeds and leave for 10+ minutes
Wrap the area you want to plant with fabric, soil and string. (see video) Rub seeds all over it.
Water daily and bring back next week!
