April 19th, 2025: Picture Factory

Assigned Teachers:

Intro

Today’s workshop is designed by Herve Tullet and goes like this:

Fire out a list of rapid instructions to generate a bustling art powerhouse, fizzing with energy and exhilaration! With instructions and drawings flying everywhere, ‘workers’ are lost in a chain of exciting ‘jobs’, forming a giant engine of creativity. You will end up with piles of wonderful, spontaneous artwork, which can then be used to produce an exhibition display!

You will need:

  1. Leftover cardboard from the ‘Nagahaswatte 2040’ class, cut into squares or rectangles roughly the size of half an a4 sheet.

  2. Primary colors paint with a paintbrush OR Pastels

  3. Music!

  4. Scissors

Guide (please see images below)

Step 1: Divide into groups of 2-4 students. Each group needs one piece of cardboard per turn and several pots of paint + paintbrushes. Prepare some lively music to get the ‘workers’ excited.

Step 2: You, the teachers are the ‘foreman’ at the factory so you will be pointing at groups at random and issuing orders similar to the instructions listed in image 1 and 2. Remember, the instructions need to be deliberately vague, leaving room for interpretation. feel free to invent your own instructions.

Step 3: when the page is full, take it away and give the groups a fresh piece of cardboard and keep shooting instructions.

Step 4 - Assembly: (see ‘Variations’ in image 3 and 4. Create an exhibit by cutting notches in each piece of cardboard and sliding them together
